There are just some things that you have to see to believe, and the play of Niyell McCargo over the past 3 years is one of them. Her acrobatics on the court need to be seen to be believed and her 18.5 points per game average is a huge reason why the Girls Basketball team sits in 2nd place of the GMC White Division. That incredible play lifted her to become the 5th girl in the 50-year history of the school to reach the 1,000 point plateau. “It feels amazing,” Niyell said. “It’s always been a dream of mine to be enshrined on those banners hanging in the rafters and now I want to push for that 1st spot all-time.”

The crazy thing about this mark, is that Niyell is a Junior pushing for this record. She’s on pace to blow the all-time record out the window by a country mile. With that record comes the recognition though. She very may well be the gold standard of the Girls Basketball program, and she takes it in stride. “It’s unbelievable. I mean I have people all over the town looking up to me and what I’m doing. But I would like to see someone break my record.”
For all of the offensive theatrics she possesses though, her defense is still a bright spot for the team. At the time this is being written, McCargo is averaging 6 steals per game and bringing a strong defensive impact to the Raiders. “It’s really important to me. The more I improve on defense every year, the more it helps out the team. I’ve noticed my improvement every year though. I can read the offense better, my positioning has gotten better, and it’s the reason my numbers have jumped. Becoming that All-Around player benefits everyone though and makes the team better off.”

Her story isn’t close to finished yet though. Her legacy is still yet to be written with an important senior season on the way, but when her career ends as a part of the Raiders, Niyell doesn’t want to be remembered for the acrobatics or unbelievable scoring. “I want to be remembered as a student athlete, because without those good grades, you’re not going anywhere.”

Niyell McCargo’s career has been a special thing to watch unfold over the past 3 seasons and who knows what heights the Raiders can reach with a star like her anchoring the team. But for now, we can only congratulate her on an amazing accomplishment and wonder what the future holds.
