Before Coach Michael Cipot came in and took over the Football program, the Raiders used to play South Brunswick on Thanksgiving every year dating back to 1975. Seeing as South Brunswick was usually miles better than some of our past teams, the games were always lopsided at best. Since the NJSIAA playoff format changed forcing the elimination of the tradition, the Raiders haven’t lost a single game to the Vikings outscoring them 115-28. The new tradition of beating South Brunswick continued tonight as the Raiders defeated South Brunswick 19-0 off the back of a sturdy defensive showing which gave Vikings QB Vince Jairdullo no room to operate.

The game featured a new-look offense for the Raiders, one predicated on the rushing attack and it eventually broke through the South Brunswick defense with guys like Justin Batts, Tamir Gladden, Zahmir Dawud, and Tamir Jenkins being mixed into the attack. However, the attack was spearheaded by none other than QB Frankie Garbolino who put up 25% of his career rushing yards tonight rushing for 104 yards on 14 attempts. Garbolino admitted that the heavy emphasis on the run, at least on his part, wasn’t planned saying, “The coaching staff preaches to feed the hot hand and tonight it just so happened to be me so when it was working we stuck with it.”

Another storyline to follow was the emergence of Zahmir Dawud into the spotlight of the WR1 role held tightly by Marquis Perry for the past two seasons. Dawud took his shot and ran with it finding the endzone twice and frequently finding massive holes in the South Brunswick defense. Dawud placed all of the credit on his teammates though saying, “Everything I did tonight couldn’t have been done without my teammates and we hope we can build off this into Edison next week.”

Next week’s matchup will send the Raiders into Edison to take on the Eagles who look to build off their 7-4 finish last season. The game is next Friday, September 9th at 7:00 pm.
