This season, the High Schools of North Brunswick and South Brunswick entered into a historic and trailblazing cooperative sports program that sends 2 Raider hockey players to compete with South Brunswick. The 2 players, Andrew Selover and Garrett Ribner, are the first 2 hockey players in school history to participate in a program like this. “It’s really cool,” Selover said. “It’s pretty crazy to make history and be the first to do something like this.”

Selover and Ribner, who both play Goalie for their team, admitted that it started off a bit weird for them wearing the jersey of a direct and long-standing rival, but time and camaraderie eased that back a little bit. Ribner said, “It felt a little bit weird at first, especially wearing South Brunswick merch around my own school on game day, but as the season started to go on and time passed, it felt almost natural.”

Hockey is a growing sport both in the broad stance of the world and around our county. The number of teams has jumped significantly over the past decade in Middlesex County and media attention for it is more widespread for the big leagues like the NHL. The current players have a message for anyone in North Brunswick remotely interested in playing: “Just go for it.” Andrew Selover remarked on it as a “very fun and rewarding experience. Even if you’ve never played or you don’t think you’d be very good, it’s a ton of fun, no matter the skill level.”
