The boys basketball coaching staff wanted to see improvement on the court this season- but they also hoped that the student-athletes would learn a little more about themselves and about what it takes to be a well-rounded individual. It's not uncommon for coaches to talk to the players about high expectations and about hardwork and effort. Most coaches push their athletes to listen and to adjust, to dig in when it counts and to fight through adversity. But many coaches don't add an extra layer: a leadership program for more consistency.

This season Coach Raheem Byrom, with the aid of Coach Trigg, developed weekly meeting sessions with the NBTHS boys basketball team members to discuss some core concepts: the 5 C's, as they were called.
Each Tuesday and Thursday the players would gather for an hour before the start of practice to review one of the C's: Character, Conduct, Conflict Resolution, Confidence, and Communication.

The sessions provided a structured opportunity for the student-athletes to learn more about the program's core tenents. They were also a means to a greater end: improving as a an individual.
